Finding the Pumpkin Spice Latte in Your Organization

PSLTemperatures are dropping, it’s getting darker earlier, and the leaves are changing colors. Candy corn and mini candy bars are front and center at the grocery store. This can only mean one thing: fall is here. Fall is my favorite season of the year, so this all makes me very happy. Those who know me well know that I have a weakness for anything pumpkin or pumpkin flavored; specifically, I love a good pumpkin spice latte (better known as PSL). I associate the drink with all things fall, and I look forward to it every year. Just thinking about it as I type this makes me happy.

As I was anxiously awaiting its debut earlier this year, I started thinking about how I can relate the PSL to something in my own organization. In other words, is there something – a program or event, project, team outing, etc. – that you specifically associate with a season and that you look forward to year after year? Does it make you excited just thinking about it? For many, I can imagine that would be your annual meeting. For me, that is our Fall Board Meeting. It’s a time for all of our volunteers to gather together and celebrate the success of the year, while also planning ahead for the future.

As an employee of any organization, I think it’s very important to have your own PSL. And you may find that what you look forward to the most is what your colleague looks forward to the least, which I view as a good thing! Of course, in the ideal situation, people have many things that they anxiously await, but most likely there is one that stands out above the rest.

I challenge you to identify your own PSL and see if your colleagues feel the same. You might be surprised at the results!
